Many houses and apartments built before 1978 have paint that contains lead (called lead-based paint). Prior to 1978, when the federal government banned lead-based paint from housing, it was commonly used both on the interiors and exteriors of houses. HUD estimates that approximately 25% of all housing in the U.S. still have some lead paint issues Lead from paint, chips and dust can pose serious health hazards if not taken care of properly.
